چکیده

The goal of this research is to acquire a quantitative understanding, leading to predictive models, of the broader aspects of linear and nonlinear sound scattering, transmission and coherency in oceanic sediments and bubbly mixtures pertinent to the shallow-water acoustics. Of particular interest is the delineation of different regimes of behavior as a function of frequency, bubble size distribution, flow characteristics and volume fraction, and sediment properties. In all cases, we focus on lowerfrequency behavior for which the effective medium approximation is valid.

The Physics of Sound Scattering From, and Attenuation Through, Compliant Bubbly Mixtures

The goal of this research is to acquire a quantitative understanding, leading to predictive models, of the broader aspects of linear and nonlinear sound scattering, transmission and coherency in oceanic bubbly mixtures pertinent to the shallow-water acoustics. This includes a conceptual understanding of the role played by damping and stabilization mechanisms in bubble dynamics and longevity. Of...

Determination of sediments diameter using acoustic waves

The use of acoustic waves in researches related to sea water is of most importance among scientists recently. Since these waves are the only waves, transmitted in water with lowest attenuation and high speed, they can be used in many scientific fields. The main goal of this research is to better understand the physics and mechanisms of sound-seabed interaction, including acoustic penetration, p...

High-Frequency Scattering from Water Saturated Sandy Sediments: Laboratory Study

Reported measurements of seabed scattering are largely confined to relatively low frequencies, up to 300 kHz, see, e.g., [Jackson and Richardson] and references therein. Still higher frequencies, up to a few megahertz, are used in seafloor imagery (e.g., in pencil-beam sonars), particularly to observe dynamic processes at the seafloor in shallow water. From the physics of sound-sediment interac...

A New Approach for Scatter Removal and Attenuation Compensation from SPECT/CT Images

Objective(s): In SPECT, the sinogram contains scatter and lack of attenuated counts that degrade the reconstructed image quality and quantity. Many techniques for attenuation and scatter correction have been proposed. An acceptable method of correction is to incorporate effects into an iterative statistical reconstruction. Here, we propose new Maximum Likelihood Expectation Maximiz...

Acoustic inversions for measuring boundary layer suspended sediment processes.

Although sound has been applied to the study of sediment transport processes for a number of years, it is acknowledged that there are still problems in using the backscattered signal to measure suspended sediment parameters. In particular, when the attenuation due to the suspension becomes significant, the uncertainty associated with the variability in the scattering characteristics of the sedi...
